Nairobi Excursions
Nairobi has been used as a stop over by millions of people who've gone to safari in the Mara, Amboseli and other parts of this beautiful country. However, as you'll find out, although most of the safari happens outside Nairobi and you don't have to leave Kenya's capital city for you to have a fabulous and memorable African safari experience.
Nairobi National Park
Nairobi is the only capital city with a National Park in close proximity. Wide open grass plains and backdrop of the city scrapers, scattered acacia bush play host to a wide variety of wildlife including the black rhino, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, buffaloes, giraffes and diverse birdlife with over 400 species. Visitors can enjoy the park’s picnic sites, campsites and the walking trails for hikers. You can even check in for the night at Nairobi Tented Camp, the only one in the park.
Bomas of Kenya
Bomas of Kenya lets you see the wonderful diversity of cultures that make up this fascinating country. The word Bomas was derived from "Boma" - a Swahili word for enclosed homestead and there are now many different "Bomas", each one representing one of Kenya's major ethnic groups. You cannot afford to miss the most exciting and rich diversity traditional dances, music and acrobatic show which start at 2.30pm to 4.00pm during weekdays and 3.30pm to 5.15pm during weekends and public holidays. Bomas of Kenya will take you through an adventurous journey of Kenya's past and present.
Nairobi National Museum
Nairobi National Museum showcases Kenya's rich heritage and offers opportunity for visitors to sample the rich culture, nature, contemporary art and history of the country for both leisure and education. Also within the grounds are the famous Snake Park, Botanical Gardens and a serene Nature Trail. Visitors are also treated to a variety of shopping and dining experiences. The museum is open on all 356 days throughout the year from 8.30am -17.30pm.
The Giraffe Centre
The Giraffe Centre in Nairobi is an amazing place to visit. It started as a rehabilitation project to rescue the Rothschild Giraffe. There were only 120 giraffes left in a ranch in Western Kenya when the Giraffe Center was founded. You can take part in feeding the animals and even kissing them. There’s also a beautiful nature trail. Take a stroll or hike the scenic nature trail. Giraffe center is just 40 minutes’ drive from Nairobi’ city center. It is open from 9.00am to 17.00pm - feeding and tours operate during this time.
Sheldrick Wildlife Trust
Situated within the Nairobi National Park, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is a safe haven for orphaned elephants and black rhinos. The center rescues and rehabilitates these animals before reintroducing them to the wild. Visitors can see the animals being fed or washed from 11 am to noon each day (excluding 25th December.
Karen Blixen Museum & Kazuri Beads
The Karen Blixen Museum is a popular tourist attraction. Set at the foot of Ngong hills, the museum was the set of the Oscar Award winning film, "Out of Africa".
Don't leave the country before shopping at the Kazuri Beads Factory; you can buy a gift for yourself or loved ones. Kazuri specializes in hand jewelry and pottery that celebrate Kenya’s unique culture and wildlife. It is located in what used to be part of the Karen Blixen Estate.
