Wildebeest Migration Starts Early
The Great Wildebeest Migration is the largest migration of wildlife in the world and a popular event in Kenya's Maasai Mara. Although the migration happens all year round it is the phenomenon of crossing the crocodile infested Mara River in the months of July and August that attracts huge number of enthusiasts.
Traditionally, the wildebeest start the Grumeti River crossing in June. But this is not a normal year - the wildebeest have arrived very early. Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest have been spotted spreading accross the Southern part of the Maasai Mara with more still grazing in the Grumeti area waiting to cross over into the Mara Game Reserve.
The wildebeests will remain in the Mara until October when they start the journey back to the Serengeti in Tanzania. Other animals that migrate with the wildebeests incude zebras, eland and Thompson gazelles.
